5 February 2007

Class,

Erin and Carlos were today's SAs. They are exempt from today's assignment.

Please enter your data through the link below per the instructions of Monday's assignment . . .

. . .Homework: begin to do the necessary research “footwork” for your reading response #1 which will be a close reading of a specific character from Watership Down. Your character is the one you signed up for in class. Each character has two students assigned to it unless you met with me privately to arrange to discuss a character that was not on the sign-up sheet.

Go carefully through the WD text and find every as many instances of your character as you can (some will have a lot, some will have a few).

Make a notation of every page your character appears and then give a tally of how many times your character appeared.

You’ll need to cite YOUR edition of the text (some of you have different editions).

Record this data in your journal and then post a copy of it on the English-blog.

You’ll need this important information later as you draft your reading response. It will make it easier to make your references in your paper. See the "mark of distinction" awards I gave to some students in the last assignment to see how any references to the text were cited with the page number in parentheses.

A sample entry for this particular assignment, however, for the comment box below would look something like this (just an "example," folks):

Professor Hobbs,

Johnson, Sam. The Miracle on Philadelphia Street. 1978. Boston: Goody, 2005.

The character of Billy Ray appears 23 times in the text. In my edition of the text, he can be found on page 4, 6, 12, 23, 34, 35, 45, 47, 55, 58, 62, 66, 71, 72, 73, 80, 86, 88, 93, 97, 99, 113, and 134.
