Dr. Hobbs I intend to write a synthesis essay on Oedipus Rex. In this essay I will present the most important ideas from the scholarly articles. My thesis consists in exploring the psychoanalysis theory and Freudian perspective on Oedipus Rex. My thesis will be supported by three peer-reviewed scholarly articles; which are the following: Oedipus and the Oedipal, Origins and Evolution of the Oedipus complex as Conceptualized by Freud, and Freud, The Oedipus Complex, and Greece or the Silence of Athena.

The topic of my paper will be a synthesis of three scholarly articles on the Iliad. Each has to do with either war, or the effect of the poem on the audience. One addresses the lessons of war from the Iliad, and how each generation’s interpretation of the Iliad changes, and the lessons taken away are applied differently as time goes by and attitudes change. The second deals with Homer’s ability to describe war, and the realism (or lack of) put into the battle narrative portions of the Iliad. The last one discusses the intended audience of the Iliad, and what perspectives are brought into play during the penning of this poem. The main focus of my paper will be on the wording of the Iliad and its effect on the reader.

In times of wrong doing and hurt there always seems to some type of hero in everyone. There were hero’s displayed in three of the Jataka Readings and the also, displayed in the story of the Genesis “The Flood”. The two Jataka readings that I will use are The Hare’s Self-Sacrifice and The Monkey’s Heroic Self-Sacrifice by H.T Francis and E. J. Thomas. Noah was perceived as the great hero in “The Flood” as Brahmadatta was portrayed in both of Jataka readings. These characters showed true leadership and sacrifice throughout the stories. I am going to try to persuade the point that both main characters in these readings were strong hero’s that help not just better themselves but the people around them. I will discuss how Noah took action by making a boat and saving many humans and animals. Also, I will discuss how Brahmadatta in the Jataka readings is a very strong character in all three stories and how he shows great bravery and strength.

In both plays, “Lysistrata,” by Aristophanes and “Medea,” written by Euripides, we observe women contradicting the cultural norm of submissiveness, in order to put an end to the injustices that they faced in a time when gender inequality was in existence. In both plays, the women used this cultural expectation of submission, as a technique to deceive and manipulate men, so that the women could achieve power and success. Despite these similarities that exist in both plays, there are also striking differences present as well, in relation to the situation at hand, the approach used to solve the problem, and the outcomes of these solutions in each play. Medea, for instance, employs killing as a means of revenge against her husband, who had rejected her for another woman, but this leads to the gruesome death of Medea’s two sons. In the play written by Euripides however, Lysistrata uses the plan of sexual abstinence to put an end to the war between the Athenian and Spartan men, and this results in the commendable peace between the Spartans and the Athenians.

Essay Proposal #1

In my essay I would like to compare and contrast the importance of reputation in Plato’s The Apology and in The Epic of Gilgamesh. Plato portrayed Socrates as a very plain man. Neither money nor material things were important to him. However, Socrates wanted respect for his wisdom. He did not go showboating around his knowledge. Whereas Gilgamesh flaunted everything he had. Fame and glory were his priorities and he was going to tell the whole world when he did accomplished something. Although Gilgamesh and Socrates both sought after a good reputation, the way in which they acquired their reputations differed.

I am going to write my essay following option two for my literature piece, From Poetics by Aristotle. I am going to clarify why in the play Medea the plot is considered to be “from the machine” and is not written as it says to write it in, From Poetics. Option two doesn’t say that a second piece is required but my piece of literature doesn’t have a story in it so I want to bring one in. The pot in Medea is considered wrong by the standards of Aristotle as written in From Poetics so I am going to analyze it and tell why is it wrong and give an example of what could have been written to make it correct.

The epic poem I chose to write my paper on is “The Iliad” by Homer. In this story, the Greeks come together to fight for their honor and for their culture. The stories are told from story tellers changing and making them more powerful. These stories are dated back to the 8th or 9th century BC. They are based off Trojan Wars. Towards the end it is basically about the death of the Trojan captain Hektor. In this paper I will be talking about the wars of the Trojan and how they defended their honor.

As a proposal for my first paper critical/analytical paper, I choose to write about Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The approach which I decided to use for my paper is option 3. The sources I plan on using for this essay would be the original text, and other scholarly sources as well as some peer-reviewed articles which will go along with the concept of the book. Each book contains a different aspect of a bigger story and varies between each of the books. Since each of the books share a similar general idea, synthesis of the ideas or concepts of each book would be a topic of interest.

Proposal

Option three will be the most suitable paper topic for my reading. I chose Metamorphosis by Apuleius. I would like to use the three scholarly sources and then examine the growth of the main character, Lucius. I would like to use the information learned from the scholarly sources and integrate them with my own ideas on how Lucius develops physically and mentally throughout the course of the story. I have already found a few useful sources in the library and I think that there are a lot more out there that I could benefit from. Metamorphosis is a very well known ancient text that I will be able to learn a lot from.

I will be writting my critical anylitical paper on one or a maximum of 3 of the antient egyptian love poems. I am currently still undesided on which poem or poems I will write about yet, but I will most likely make it a compare and contrast essay showing the similarities and differences if I choose to write on multiple poems or try to elaborate on try to elaborate on one poem and a piece of art work to go along with it if possible.

I will be comparing and contrasting two stories from The King James Version of the Holy Bible, between the books of Jobs and Jonah. I am believe that Jobs 8 and Psalms 38 are going to be good to compare and contrast. For both deal with repenting and whether one feels genuine regret when deciding whether or not to do so.

Not only will I explain my thoughts and feelings of these poems, but I will use scholarly articles to compare and contrast each of them.

My persuasive essay will attempt to persuade that the novel Satyricon by Petroneus was more than just the story of a former gladiator, but was rather a great example of daily life among the average people of Rome. Although it was a novel, which is fake it showed the ideas and values and spirit of the common people during Imperial Rome.

In my paper I will compare two women; Medea and Lysistrata, I will compare how they are alike and different. I will also compare their relationships with their husbands and how both aspire to get back at their husbands weather it is for the good or for the bad.

My outside text is The Odyssey Books 1-12. I decided to use option 1 for my paper. I feel that I would be able to come up with a good paper describing the similarities and the differences between the journeys that take place in The Odyssey and Medea. Since they have similar characteristics i feel like this is a feasible topic.

My paper will be on the legendary story “ The Aeneid ”. I will write about Aeneas’s long journey to Italy, And his struggles on the way there. The Aeneid is almost like a sequel to the Illiad because begins right after the Greeks sack the city of Troy. I will explain the theme of the story, and why love promotes war for the second time. I will also compare and contrast the Aeneid with the Illiad, and explain why Achilles and Aeneas are so different from one another.

Pruyser, Paul W. "Psychological Examination: Augustine." Journal for the Scientific

Study of Religon 5 (1966): 284-89.

The authors thesis is the examination of Augustine and the real person he truly was in society and through the eyes of others. This article goes into detail of all the various things Augustine did for people and his church. It gives exmaples of where he was a leader and and how people looked up to him for guidance. It states the hardships he went through to get to where he is today. The author points out that Augustine was very opinionated and like to be heard and takiung serious. The author states that he is very musical and loves theater. This example from the text helps us better understand Augustine and what types of things we liked to do. This information could possibly help explain why Augustine was the way he was.
I plan on using this article In the next upcoming syntheis paper because it really helps explain who Augustine really was and what personality traits could of lead him to take over all the corruption within the church and turn it into something postive. There is something that intrests me about why he thought he was the one to rebuild the church.

The topic for my second paper is “From the Koran (only the readings in Vol. B) + the introduction from the editors”. The first scholarly source that I have identified as one which I will be using in my second paper is thepeopleofthebook.org. I feel as though the purpose of this site is to inform individuals on Muslim beliefs and teachings. This is because it highlights the main points Muslim teachings in brief detailed summaries. The second is a scholarly journal by Katajun Amirpur who discusses why he feels as though the approach the Koran has changed since the revolution of 1979. To support his argument he discusses the thoughts and beliefs of Muslim theologians. I feel as though both of these sources can help me in my paper because one gives the main details about the Islamic faith while the other talks about how it has changed throughout the years.

: This site highlights the main points in Islamic belief.

Katajun Amirpur: This author argues that since the 1979 revolution there has been a change in the approach to the Koran.

This article talks about a book that was written by Jo Ann Brant. It basically talks about the elements in the book of John that could be compared to those of typical Greek Tragedy. That is the major point, that even though both were comprised in different parts of history, the stories are comparable because of the basic elements of literature. This article could potentially be useful for my paper because my story has elements of religion in it and it has been said to be very comparable to greek tragedy.

Plays about morality have changed drastically over the last several years. Any form of art needs to be recognized in its creation period for it to be truly valued. “Theatricality” is referring to how the play’s performance comes off at the time it is performed. “The materials of the stage” are directed at an unclear idea signifying that they represent and suggest a hidden meaning from what is obvious.

This source should be a useable source for me because it talks about Everyman as a play and some of the different aspects of it. This should fit well since it is pretty broad I can find a few different ideas from it.

Ganim in his article about Sir Gawain elaborates on the theme and meanings of the story of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”. John Ganim’s thesis in this article is “The circumstances surrounding the Green Knight’s part in the plot are quite different: the clues are given to us one by one and only put together at the end”. Ganim is trying to prove how this story has many of themes and symbols that all comes together at the end of the story. There is not just one theme to sum up this one story because there is so many to choose from that have an impact on the characters and the plot. Some themes in this story as said in article is temptation, seduction, games, nature, chivalry and seasons. I chose this article because I felt it offered a lot of factual information about the story I am researching and helped break down the story into components so that each theme or symbol was elaborated on.

The “Odyssey of the Soul” reflects on what Augustine encountered in early stages of life, why he converted to Christianity and how he devotes his life to god and why. Augustine strongly dislikes the fact that young adults are taught to emphasize their lives on material things rather than god and the worship of god. In his early life he goes through a stage of sexual adventures and later sees these as a lesson about grief and confusion. The author in this book explains and reviews how Augustine converted to be St. Augustine and how he, in order to live a better life devoted to god, gives up what he used to do. He also discusses how this conversion impacts his soul and how he comes to peace with himself by doing that.

Runesson looks to define the Matthean community in the first century A.D. against the traditional idea that they are the polar opposite of the Pharisee denomination. Using examples from the text of Matthew he tries to explore the Christian community of the first century without the bias emplaced on the gospel by later works. Runesson also takes into account the tensions before and after 70 A.D. The source I’m using is a book about the Odyssey. It doesn’t contain the actual story of Odysseus, but it tells me a lot about him and other people related to him. That’s all the information I need because I’ve read the story many times, yet I’ve never paid much attention to the story of Odysseus’ son preceding the Odyssey.
This source is going to help me write my paper and come up with my own thesis statement because my paper is going to be a synthesis paper, and the book is written like a long synthesis paper. I will get a good idea on where to begin, and how develop the story from reading the article.

The essay of Legarreta-Mentxaka explores the connections between metaphysical beliefs reflected in the work of W. B. Yeats and the main ideas of Taoist philosophy. There is a brief introduction to the principles of Taoism, followed by an exploration of A Vision, Yeats's s philosophical work. This is followed by some examples of Yeats's s work. Two poems written at the time of the composition of A Vision are discussed in detail--'An Irish Airman foresees his Death' (written in 1918) is approached in terms of Taoism's approach to mortality, and 'The Second Coming' (written in 1919) is reviewed in the aspect of the connections between Yin Yang theory and Yeats's historicism. The references provide sources of Taoist influence available to Yeats. I still do not have a topic idea on my mind but this essay is interesting as it provides examples of connections and influences of Taoism principles over the work of later authors.

Lee, Michelle "The Song of Roland." Poetry Criticism. Ed. Vol. 83. 30 September 2008

This story is about Charlemagne who is king of the Franks and Holy Roman Emperor. He was accompanied by 5,000 of his men in the year 778. On the return to France, the army was ambushed and more then 1,000 men were killed including Roland. This article I found is very useful to the topic that I chose because it gives the textual history, major themes, characters, and then there is a critical portion of the article. Some of the major points it talk about is good versus evil and courage one must have. The loyalty a person has under his or her king. This article gives me a better understanding of what the story is about and what loyalty really means. People depend on other people and it shows that if a person fails to do his or her job, it can cost the life of another.

The “Odyssey of the Soul” reflects on what Augustine encountered in early stages of life, why he converted to Christianity and how he devotes his life to god and why. Augustine strongly dislikes the fact that young adults are taught to emphasize their lives on material things rather than god and the worship of god. In his early life he goes through a stage of sexual adventures and later sees these as a lesson about grief and confusion. The author in this book explains and reviews how Augustine converted to be St. Augustine and how he, in order to live a better life devoted to god, gives up what he used to do. He also discusses how this conversion impacts his soul and how he comes to peace with himself by doing that.

Everyman is a biblical play that is considered to be a mystery play and a morality play. I am going to do option one and try to compare the Aneid play with this one. The Aneid involves many gods who help out the people when they go in acts of war or just when they need something. In Everyman there is one God and he watches over all of the people. I am going to make a connection between the gods in one story and God in the other.

In this next paper I have chosen to use the option 2, research-informed persuasive/argumentative essay. This paper will be based on comparing the Confession’s by Augustine and the idea of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. In Augustine’s journey he first starts off as a young child that gets into a lot of trouble and steals and is very sexually active. Augustine is stuck in the cave until he has a conversation with his mother that enlightens him and this is the point where comes out of the cave. Augustine becomes a Christian and this leads him to be enlightened. At first people try to tell Augustine that he is living a bad life and he doesn’t listen but than he finally comes to realize that he needs to change his ways. Augustine’s whole journey is centered on Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.
Thesis:
Throughout Augustine’s journey from childhood to adulthood he experiences changes that are centered on Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.

I intend to do a research informed persuasive and argumentative paper on the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. My aim of this paper is to pick a few of Tagore’s poem’s and persuade readers of the interpretations of them and what they mean, with the help of my sources. After doing my research and reviewing several other Indian poets and their works, Tagore’s poems caught my interest the most. Since poetry works can be taken from so many different views and interpretations, I believe that this will be a good topic for my paper because I can persuade readers to see the same way I do in the meaning and what the Tagore’s poems are trying to say.

The main theme of this book reflects the idea that good will come to those who do good, and punishment will come to the wrongdoers. In my synthesis paper, I will address the main idea that “The Koran” is a book that serves as God’s commands to man to obey, believe and live by his word so that their destiny will be a good one. I also hope to address the idea that “The Koran” is God’s warnings to man that the unbelievers and evil doers will be mislead and punished by God, while the believers will be delivered from evil, directed to the right path and rewarded by God in the future.

When I red The Story of Ying-Ying I felt confused. I still do and re-read certain passages. In some way this story reminds me of the movie Pretty Woman, except for the exactly opposite endings. So I am thinking to probably write a paper linking the two stories and answering questions like: do we choose career over true love, or is old tradition subject to change over time? I am still undecided and definitely need to read the story again and again to better understand certain moments.

The short story I will be doing my research paper on is “Miss Brill” by Katherine Mansfield. I will be using the Psychological/Psychoanalytical theoretical approach to analyze this short story. This means I will be examining the mind and looking for hidden and unconscious motives for behavior. I will be applying this method to not only the main character Miss Brill, but also to the author Katherine Mansfield. I will research the author’s life for clues as to why she wrote the story and why Miss Brill acts so strangely.
First I need to explore Katherine Mansfield’s past and see if there were any life experiences that influenced the writing of “Miss Brill”. This information can be found in The Penguin Biographical Dictionary of Women. I also have to learn more about psychology in order to examine either Miss Brill or Mansfield. Communication and Social Influence Processes by Charles Berger will help me learn more about Miss Brill and her behavior while at the park. The Writing About Literature book will guide me as I examine this literary work through the Psychological/Psychoanalytical approach.

Proposal: Causes of Insanity in “The Tale-Tell Heart”

“The Tale-Tell Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story about the main character who is planning to kill the old man because of his “vulture eye” (Poe 297). At the end, the speaker
kills the old man because of his heart. This man is definitely insane of thinking of murder and
doing the action for an illogical reason. Sigmund Freud and his followers can explain this
behavior of the main character.

Edgar V. Roberts’ text Writing About Literature introduces the concept of
“psychological/ psychoanalysis” (189) approach as a new key to understanding the hidden and
unconscious motives of the character’s behavior (189). In my five-page research-informed
paper, I will show how one of Freud’s followers, Marie Bonaparte’s study of the author of why
he wrote “The Tale-Tell Heart” with this plot. Also, the main character has anxiety or some
other types of abnormality to his behavior.

The Psychoanalytical States of Mind; The Way Psychologists Would Look at Tereza’s Dreams
During the course of The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, one of the main protagonists, Tereza, has a series of dreams that many psychologists would consider either unhealthy or would seem to have a hidden meaning behind them. I am going to research various proponents of the psychoanalytic theory, namely Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. I have not found any text by Carl Jung though I will add one when I find, the texts that I have found include The Basic Writings of Sigmund Freud, a piecing together of many of his works. Invitation to Psychology, a textbook on Psychology by Rachel G. Ragland, and of course the core text and the one being examined The Unbearable Lightness of Being, by Milan Kundera.
With these texts, and the one I am looking for that will be added at a later time, I will go into dream theory and research both men’s (Freud and Jung) point of view on dreams. Although Tereza’s dreams in the grand scheme of Kundera’s work are only an occurance, I believe that by looking deeper into her dreams, it is easier to understand Tereza as a character.

Feminist Views of Kundera and Coleman
The masculine-patriarchal view or better known as the Feminist theory, attempts to explore the mistaken message of the portrayal of women. The value of the women is prevalent yet not respected in the short story “Unfinished Masterpieces” By Anita Scott Coleman, as well as the novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. In my paper I will research and demonstrate through the technique of compare and contrast the similar views of weakened female roles in both of these stories.
The portrayal of women has been manipulated and deceived in several ways. In Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” his main focus is on his male characters and their psyche. The females in his novel are represented by the males in which they are involved with. In Anita Scott Coleman’s “Unfinished Masterpieces” the ideas which are focused on are of difficult situations due to inequality in our society. This inequality is represented in males as well as females yet the females need to overcome a much greater gap in regards of their gender.

Crossing a Bridge Through Time
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (1891) written by Ambrose Bierce starts with “A man stood upon a railroad bridge in northern Alabama,” (p. 199). The significance of this single line of literature gives the reader a cultural setting with an historical context given the period in which it was written. 1891 the year of this written work landed between two major wars, the Civil War and the Spanish - American War although the Civil War was still in full force in the south as the story foretells. The mention of the confederate soldiers, the union and the various armies and their fort are a dead giveaway. Other factors to consider are the mention of the southern life including blacksmiths and slaves. This all helps to determine the degree to which time period the work is taking place.
Ambrose Bierce has allowed the war and its own historical perspectives it provides to capture more than just his thoughts. Robert A. Wiggins writes in his University of Minnesota Pamphlets on American Writers No.37, Ambrose Bierce page 9: “The Civil War opened another chapter important in Bierce’s early experiences. He was proud of his service in the Union Army, though he seems not to have chosen sides on the basis of issues or principle. He served with distinction and was proudly impressed by what he saw, for the theme of war runs throughout his life and writing up to his death in 1914… (Wiggins, 9). This comes to the minds, and flows through the pens, of all who come in contact with his journals or from just the mention of Bierce and having the pleasure of writing about his life just lends to the historical context of such great experiences that include his own personal life. There wouldn’t be Bierce without war and there wouldn’t be war without Bierce, this is the tone of chapter eight, The Poles of Violence in The American 1890’s Life and Times of a Lost Generation by Larzer Ziff.
In appendix B of his text Writing About Literature, Edgar V. Roberts “…stresses the relationship of literature to its historical period, and for this reason it has had a long life.” (Roberts, 183). By using the topical/historical critical approach explained by Roberts, I will attempt to combine both the insight of Wiggins and Ziff to connect the dots on the historical timeline of the life of Bierce and the short story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge written in 1891 during the Civil War, and I will lead the reader across the bridge through this time period.

Do Females have a Purpose?
“Kate Chopin, (the name pronounced in the French way) became known to the American reading public of the early 1890’s through her Louisiana tales”. Critics considered Chopin’s writings to be brilliant, yet at the same time had doubts about it. The doubts that arose about Chopin’s writing were primarily a result of her recurring comments on female self- indulgence, and her objections to this. The critics during the eighteen hundreds believed that Chopin should not have been writing this way and reprimanded her. They also suggested that she revert to the inclusion of “sweet and loveable characters”. By researching Chopin’s authorial background and the time period in which she writes “The Story of An Hour”, we will find out whether or not feminism was actually present. Research found in Kate Chopin A Critical Biography by Per Seyersted provides evidence that feminism was indeed present. Many 19th century critics also criticized her expressions about what women are and how they should be.
Chopin’s style of writing presents a challenge in determining whether or not feminism was present. She had a style of incorporating the social doctrine of women and the freedom associated with such doctrines using marriage, in this short story, as the capsule for her comments. That is, the possibility that she is a feminist in her stories but not in the outside world, since she is hiding from actual world criticism, so she protests through her work. Perhaps the only way to state her true feeling was to write and incorporate it within a story. This is one of the sub-topics that will be pursued in the actual paper, as this is something that can also be looked at more in depth.
Additionally, information found in both The Other Civil War American Women in the Nineteenth Century by Catherine Clinton and American Feminism: New Issues for a Mature Movement edited by Janet K. Boles, will be used. Both books will help in the portrayal of how women were treated in the nineteenth century and with comparisons to the present day, which will be another subtopic in the paper. After writing about the research and how it relates to Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, then the conclusion will consist of my opinion of the writer, how she writes, and if this theme of feminism was brought out, vividly.

Proposal
For my research paper I chose to write about the Marxist theory and how it relates to the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. I am Planning on carrying out this proposal by first explaining the Marxist theory and what it means. Then I will be relating the social class of Mathilde Loisel to the reasons why she had to borrow the necklace, and why her and her husband had to work so hard to get enough francs to replace the necklace.
The research that will be needed for this paper will have to be books retrieved from the NetLibrary on the Saint Leo University library website. I plan on using an article titled “The Object of Marxist Theory of Law” from the book A Companion to Philosophy of Law and Legal Theory, an article titled “Marxist Literary Theory” from the book Reader’s Guide to Literature in English, and I also plan to use the short story The Necklace by Guy Maupassant. All of these books and articles except “The Necklace” are retrieved at The NetLibrary.

Psychological Outlook: A Rose for Emily’s Emily Grierson
Miss Emily Grierson, secretive and lonely women who has recently just died in the town known as Jefferson. Everyone in the town has gathered for her funeral, not so much to mourn, but to figure out the clues that lead to the conclusion of the women’s life. She was once friendly and welcoming to the townspeople, but as she gained a relationship with a name known as Homer Barron that quickly ended, she aged and became rude, antisocial and mean.
Emily is an example of Frieda Fromm-Riechman’s culture and child development of loneliness. According to Roberts texts, “ Psychoanalysis provided a new key to the understanding of character by claiming that behavior is caused by hidden and unconscious motives” (Roberts 189) and can analyze authors and the artistic process (189). During this psychological research-informed paper, William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” will be examined on the behavior of Miss Emily and her culture based on the social interaction with the townspeople.

Research Proposal: Maupassant’s Archetypal Approach
I have chosen to focus my research paper on the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. The paper will break down the importance of the archetypal approach in the story, or rather the opposite archetypal method. I found that Maupassant puts a cynical twist on the age old fairytale Cinderella. Instead of the uplifting rise to wealth from the position of servitude, Maupassant’s character Mathilde faces the decent from middle class to the slums thanks to her irresponsibility and dishonesty.
My research topics will include different examples of classic archetypes, focusing mainly on the fairytale Cinderella, the psychological nature of archetypes and The Necklace’s unusual take on the archetypal method. The Cinderella research will involve finding similarities and differences between the characters Cinderella and Mathilde from beginning to end of both stories. The bulk of my researching will come from Carl Jung and his psychological theories on archetypes and his studies on the conscious and unconscious state of mind. Since Jung’s studies are the base for any archetypes, I will be referencing them quite often in my paper. Then of course I will explain my overall reason for choosing the archetype method because of its presence in the short story the Necklace.
I plan on picking up more research material as the paper progresses and using the key archetype and Jung research should make my paper a quality one with many details as well as connections between all the researches.

A Priest’s Way of Life in “Araby”
In “Araby” a young boy, who the author never names has a crush on a girl in his neighborhood. He finally arranges a date to meet up with her at a bazzar after school. All day he thinks about meeting up with Managan’s sister (his date), and finally the times comes but the young boys uncle is not home yet to give him money to go to the bazzar. Eventually the uncle comes home but he is four hours late, but the young boys insist on still meeting Managan’s sister. When he finally gets to the bazzar he realizes it is too late the girl is gone. The author James Joyce writes the setting of this short story in Ireland, in what I believe is the early 20th century.
The setting of the story is important because Ireland at this time was still very much involved in church especially the Christian religion. There are many details in this short story that relate to either the church or the Christian religion. In the first and second paragraph there is mention of a priest and Christian school right off the bat. “He had been a very charitable priest”(Joyce 61). They talk about the life of a certain priest in the second paragraph, and that is what I want to focus my research paper on.
I am going to write about a priest’s life during this time in Ireland using Roberts “topical/historical approach theory” (183). I want to research everything, from how they lived all the way to their detailed religious practices. Using the historical theory approach I am going go into detail about how Irish priests of the early 20th century went about the practice of Christian religion.
