ENG 122 Students,
Sadly, about HALF of you felt it was unnecessary to actually do the assignment on Ibsen's A Doll's House as instructed. If you stil think that not completing the homework assignments are NOT affecting your participation score (See our syllabus), you are sorely mistaken.
If you missed today’s class, we began screening the film Everything is Illuminated. So that you won’t be lost in the next two screenings and class discussion, please be responsible and find the film in a video rental of your choice and watch it. After the in-class screening is done, I will put the film on reserve in the library.

. . . enter your proposal for the FINAL research paper. This is NOT your proposal for short paper #2. That is a separate assignment. I want you to begin thinking about your final research paper now so that it doesn't creep up on you at the end. You CAN, of course, change your proposal later down the road, if you wish. Your choices for the final research paper is reprinted below. Choose one of the six options. In your proposal, let me know which option you've chosen, which primary texts you'll use, and what you think your thesis will be (I understand that you may change this later as you've read more). I would expect to see AT LEAST a paragraph of explanatory information. Post HERE and on Turnitin.com by the beginning of class, Thursday.
Thursday, the SLU library's Carol Moon will speak to our class about how to use the ILL (Interlibrary Loan) service of the library. If you haven't ordered your drama text from the list yet, you will probably want to hear Carol's instructions on how to do this.
For your final, research paper (see syllabus), you have a choice. You can [1.] write either a new ten (FULL) page research paper (OR) [2.] you can write ten (FULL) page research paper that BUILDS upon one of your existing, shorter papers. The second choice would mean that you would significantly, revise, rewrite, reorganize, add content, and add research to expand, clarify, and improve your original 3-4 page paper’s concept. (NOTE: each option MUST include a strong thesis as a starting point and should use the linguistic “tools” we have discussed in class to demonstrate/prove your thesis. . Any/all primary and secondary sources cited MUST be fully documented in your paper as MLA-style in-text citations and in a works cited page):
A. If you choose to write a completely NEW ten-page research paper, you may:
· 1: Write a new 10-11 page research-informed, compare-and-contrast analytical paper on any work you’ve already read (or, will read) for this course in any genre plus one-two additional texts used in the course based on a topical (or) thematic connection, e.g., two pieces about birds (or) two texts about “the death of love.” You might find a similarity in the causes/source(s) of conflict or in the anti-heroic characteristics of the protagonists (if the texts are narratives). Primary works used would not have to be in the same genre or by the same author. Use, at least, four scholarly sources (not “reviews” or Internet sources), at least two of which should be articles from peer-reviewed academic journals or published books, to support your thesis. For more information on how to write a “compare-and-contrast” paper, re-read AWG pages 26-27 and AWR pages 7-8 and 763-776.
· 2: Write a new 10-11 page research-informed, compare-and-contrast analytical paper on any work you’ve already read (or, will read) for this course plus one-two additional texts by the same author (or) in the same genre, e.g. two-three texts by author Ray Bradbury (or) two-three works of drama. You could discuss any connection you find between the texts whether it is theme, topic, or style. You might discuss, for example, “the cycle of life” as explained by Emily Dickinson using a poem about birth, a poem about reproduction, and a poem about death. Or, you might discuss, for example, the use of irony or the author’s tone in two or three poems. Use, at least, four scholarly sources (not “reviews” or Internet sources), at least two of which should be articles from peer-reviewed academic journals or published books, to support your thesis. · 3: Write a new 10-11 page research-informed, “synthesis” paper that integrates, explores, and clarifies the key concepts you understand/absorb/retain from four-five scholarly articles (not “reviews” or Internet sources) found in either a critical text edition of your work (usually in book form) or in peer-reviewed academic journals or published books, about your particular work of literature (can be anything you’ve read for the course). For more information on how to write a synthesis paper, see the articles I’ve posted on the English-blog (and, I have sent by e-mail).
B. If you choose to add to, develop, rewrite/rework, or expand one of the three shorter papers you wrote for this course into a ten-page research paper, you may:
· 4. From the OLD (short paper) option#1: You can add to, develop, rewrite/rework, or expand the original paper you did for this option by adding in one-two additional works of literature as primary sources (texts of your choice don’t have be ones read in class) into the mix. For example, if your thesis was topical or thematic—a comparison of “consequences” or the theme of “materialism” in the poems of Robert Frost and Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, you could expand the discussion by discussing the same theme in another work, such as the film Crash or the novel Catcher in the Rye. The end result should be 10-11 full pages of text with appropriate sources cited in-text and in your annotated bibliography.
· 5. From the OLD (short paper) option#2: You can add to, develop, rewrite/rework, or expand the original paper you did for this option by adding in one-two additional works of literature as primary sources (texts of your choice don’t have be ones read in class) into the mix. For example, if your author was Emily Dickinson and you compared her different treatment of “children” in two different poems, you could expand the discussion by adding additional poems by her that also address the topic of “children.” The end result should be 10-11 full pages of text with appropriate sources cited in-text and in your annotated bibliography.
· 6. From the OLD (short paper) option#3: You can add to, develop, rewrite/rework, or expand the original paper you did for this option (the “synthesis” paper) by taking the same paper (which previously had three scholarly sources) and expanding it into a 10-11 page research paper by bringing in 2-3 additional scholarly articles into your discussion of a single primary work of Literature. Your scholarly articles (not “reviews” or Internet sources) could come from either a critical text edition of your work (usually in book form) or in peer-reviewed academic journals or published books, about your particular work of literature (can be anything you’ve read for the course). Dear ENG 122 Students,
I hope you found some success searching for scholarly articles today about your chosen poem. Remember, print & staple the article and bring it to our next class meeting. We may workshop the articles to determine as a group if they are suitable “academic” resources. If we don’t discuss them in our next meeting, we will discuss them soon.
In the meantime, please read the information below this paragraph. It will give you some guidance on the first paper for this module (poetry). We still have some time but some of you may want to go ahead and begin working on your proposals. The sheet gives you three options for approaching the paper. Choose ONE approach. You will choose from the remaining two for papers two and three. However, which one you begin with is up to you.
Assignments for ENG 122: Academic Writing II
1. Critical/Analytical Essay #1 on Poetry
Your 2-3 page critical/analytical essay must include, in some way, your chosen work of literature from the sign-up sheet AND it must take one of the following approaches that you have not used before (NOTE: each option MUST include a strong thesis as a starting point and should use the linguistic “tools” we have discussed in class to demonstrate/prove your thesis. Option 1: Write a research-informed compare-and-contrast analytical paper of your chosen work of literature from the sign-up sheet plus one other from our texts based on a topical connection, e.g., two pieces about birds. Use, at least, two scholarly articles, i.e., articles from peer-reviewed academic journals or published books, to support your thesis. For more information on how to write a “compare-and-contrast” paper, re-read AWG pages 26-27 and AWR pages 7-8 and 763-776.
Option 2: Write a research-informed compare-and-contrast analytical paper of your chosen work of literature from the sign-up sheet plus one other text by the same author, e.g. two pieces by author Ray Bradbury. Use, at least, two scholarly articles, i.e., articles from peer-reviewed academic journals or published books, to support your thesis. Option 3: Write a research-informed “synthesis” paper that integrates and explores the key concepts you understand/absorb/retain from three scholarly articles, i.e. articles from peer-reviewed academic journals or published books, about your chosen work of literature from the sign-up sheet. For more information on how to write a synthesis paper, see the articles I’ve posted on WebCT (or, I will send you by e-mail).
REMEMBER: You will write three short critical/analytical papers for this course. For each of them, you will choose a work from a sign-up sheet that must be used in your thesis. You must also use a different approach for each paper. For example, if you use “Option 3” for paper 1, you must choose either “Option 1” or “Option 2” for paper two. For the final paper, you must use the final option that you have not yet used in a paper.

Van Wart, Alice. “Overview of ‘Barbie Doll.’” Poetry for Students 9
(2000): 2 Sept. 2008 .
Ms. Van Wart discusses Marge Piercy’s “Barbie Doll” in her paper. The main focus of the paper is how Women got tired of their roles in society and wanted to push through the stereotypes that were enforced onto them by men. Van Wart tells us that the image of ‘Barbie Doll’ is used as a metaphor in how women are supposed emulate. She then goes into dissecting the poem by stanza. As in when a girl is young she is introduced into her stereotypes and when she is older she is forced to look at appearances more than ever before. A woman must conform and strive to be both feminine and homemaker. That women are merely meant to be pleasing to the eyes, and it does not matter what’s on the inside. Van Wart goes on to point out that to be perfect you must let your true self go. I chose this journal because it explores many of the same points that jumped out to me when I first read the poem. I’m looking to explore women’s roles in society and how they are viewed by the rest of the world. How by making a simple comment can be devastating to the receiver.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fort, Theresa. “Voices of a Gendered Nation: Barbie and G.I. Joe Speak Out.” Composition and Literature.
Reading Area Community College. Summer 2002.
Ms. Fort examines Marge Piercy’s “Barbie Doll” in her paper. The main point Fort is trying to make is that both sexes are pushed into certain gender roles. That not only women are pushed with stereotypes but men are as well. That women are pressured into meeting unrealistic standards by their parents and society. She also examines, Dr. William Pollack’s book Real Boys, about looking into a boy ego and how he must conform as well. Men must be both a gentlemen and strong. She uses the poem G.I. Joe to mirror Piercy’s Barbie Doll. The two poems push the main characters to extremes. In Barbie doll she cuts off her legs and nose and in G.I. Joe he blows off his arms. Hopefully no one has gone to this extreme, but I’m sure a lot of people have felt this helpless. I chose this journal because it explores the same points that the other one does as well as exploring the male point of view. I’m looking to explore the difference between men and women’s view of themselves through the public eyes.

Zweig, Stefan, and Robert Stevenson. Critical Survey of Poetry. 2nd ed. Pasadena, CA: Salem Press Inc.,
In this book, they compare three of William Carlos Williams’ poems, “The Red Wheelbarrow”, “Poem”, and The Locust Tree in Flower”. All three poems use a visual that is common to most people like a wheelbarrow, chickens, and rain, but than he adds color so that the audience can picture it in their minds. In a previous paragraph, Williams’ theory or lack there of was questioned in means of his early poetry. Not only that but also the fact that his poems made a reality all of their own. The reality depends on how the reader precives the poem. His poems were not normal according to the time period; his new type of writing made the authors of this book think, “… his poems achieved a reality of their own…”.
I am using this acticle because I want to compare different people's opinions on the poem. In this article it is clear to me that they think he just writes about everyday objects and decribes them in such a way that almost anyone can see them in their mind. It is a good opinion and I want to know more about this one and others.
Bawer, Bruce. Poetry Criticism V7. Detroit: Gale Research Inc. 1994.
Bruce Bawer seems to think that Williams had a reason for writing about the objects that he did, but Bawer does not know why he wrote about them. To him the peom’s reasoning is unclear. He goes on to say that the little that Williams does give his audience is not enough to come to a deep sense of anything or an opinion. The message that the poem is trying to communicate is not important to Bawer, he actually says that there is no message, but Williams had to have had a message to write the poem about like inspiration. Bawer’s opinion seems to change in the end of the first paragraph when he says, “Perhaps there is a purity here…”, he just does not think that it has to do with the words or sounds Williams uses.
Bawer is a very interesting man, he has his opinions but does not want to rule anything out; he keeps an open mind. I think that an open mind is one of the most important things to have when someone is reading a poem. His opinion fasinates me and that is why I am using it. It is polar opposite from Zweig and Stevenson. It will be very helpful when I start to compare the opinions of different people.

Aaltion, Iiris, Huang, Jiehua. “Women managers’ careers in information technology in China: high flyers with emotional costs?” Journal of Organizational Change Management Vol. 10 No. 2 (2007): 227-244.
This study focus on women in China working in information technology. One of the many thing presented was that women have a “can do” attitude towards their professional careers. They define the ideal woman as one who can enjoy both life and work or one who can excel at both work and life. The fact that women view themselves that way certainly gives them an edge especially in technical fields such as information technology or engineering over men in similar positions. Women interviewed for this study cited their passion, energy and enthusiasm for their work. They have accepted the fact that there will be long hours, traveling outside their home cities. Even though they are achieving great success they do not like being called “superwomen” as many would refer to them.
Additionally, the IT industry helps. IT is an emerging (and evolving) industry which has no established rules who could or could not be a manager. Instead, it relies heavily in the core competencies required by their managers.
De Vita, Emma. “Where have all the IT girls gone?” Management Today Feb 2008: 46.
This article shows that in the UK women in the technology field have decreased. Some of the reasons presented are the male dominated technology field, corporate culture (it is a boy’s club,) and being marginalized. On the other hand, the article highlights the fact that some women thrive in the IT field often fighting against the odds, or that they quit and go on to have successful career as IT entrepreneurs. The article concludes with the fact that firms want to integrate more women in their ranks by offering such things as flexible working schedules and specific training. One of the many reasons the trend is happening, is because diverse male-female teams make better decisions and in the end affects the ability to produce higher profits. Three successful women in various IT roles are being showcased in this article too. This further emphasizes the increasingly dominant role women are playing in the IT business.

Wallace, Patricia. “Divided Loyalties Literal and

Dear Dr. Hobbs,
For my final paper I would like to write about Emily Dickinson. We read a few of her poems in class like “I could not stop for death”. I would like to compare and contrast some of her works. I do believe that it falls under choice A. I have started to look up primary sources and have found many, with your go ahead I will be able to easily get the five sources I need. The reason that I would like to write about Emily Dickinson is because not only do I enjoy and respect her works, but I also like the fact that she is different. Her personality and actions are so interesting; I believe all of those factors will help me write a great final paper.

Proposal for Final Research Paper
For my final research paper I will be choosing number 4 from the list which is option #1; a research-informed compare-and-contrast analytical paper, based on a topical connection. I will be adding on to my first paper, “Forced to Grow Up: Marge Piercy and Grace Caroline Bridges’s Explore the Loss of Innocence.” I will be combing the works of Marge Piercy’s, “Barbie Doll”, Grace Caroline Bridges’s, “Lisa’s Ritual, Age 10,” and Henrik Ibsen’s, “A Doll’s House.”
My original thesis was, In Piercy’s and Bridges’s poems, they explore why, when young girls lose their innocence at an early age, they grow up to be incomplete women, who are always searching for something. Henrik Ibsen’s, “A Doll’s House” main character, Nora is a good example of a person who loses their innocence. She has been sheltered for almost her entire life by her husband, she has trouble being on her own; she relies on him entirely. Throughout the play there is a change in her and she loses her innocence in the process.
I am hoping to add more depth to my paper, as I continue my research. I hope to find another piece of work to add in and to find more concrete information to support my ideas.

For my final reasearch paper of the year i will choose to do a synthisis paper based off of one of my previous papers im not sure if i am going to choose my first paper or one of my other two papers. i am waiting to see which of my papers turns out to be the best to expand on.

I am going to do question number 5. In this paper I am going to expand on the orignal paper that I did for this option.
I chose this option because I see it as an opportunity to elaborate more on topic of my interest.

I have choosen J.M. Synge's play Riders to the sea. It is about a old women named Maurya who has lost her husband, father in law, and five sons to the sea. When the play begins Nora and Cathleen, her two daughters, recieve word that another son, Michael, has been claimed by the sea far to the north. Bartley, the last of the sons, is about to sail to Connemara to sell a horse and ignors his mother when she ask him to stay. However, he leaves peacefully, but his mother predicts that he will be dead by the end of the day and the two daughters scold her for saying that. Therefore, Maurya chases after her last son to bless his voyage, but sees the ghost of Michael riding behind him and turns around and runs home. Then soon after she returns home some villagers bring in the corpse of Bartley, who drowned in the sea after falling off his horse.
